South Highlands Route 7-9
Three classic walks, three huge awe-inspiring mountains, three days: Jen & Sim Benson bring you the best of the South Highlands.
Three classic Munros in as many days; Schiehallion, Ben Lawers & Ben More
Shapely Schiehallion makes a great first Munro, hence its place in our weekend itinerary. Another first occurred here in 1774 when scientists calculated the mean density of the Earth, inadvertently inventing contour lines. The main route to the summit has changed in recent years – the John Muir Trust acquired east Schiehallion in 1999 and rerouted the path to reduce erosion – but its remote situation, historical significance, intriguing wildlife and excellent views remain. Ben Lawers, overlooking Loch Tay, is Scotland’s tenth-highest mountain. Part of a National Nature Reserve, it’s home to rare mountain flora and fauna and, despite being very popular, its size means it never feels crowded. The views from the summit, from Glen Coe to the Cairngorms and neighbouring Ben More – day three’s challenge – are outstanding.
