Colwyn Bay Motorcycles
The motorcycle world is quite a small one and it’s always nice to catch up with old friends. My relationship with Colwyn Bay Motorcycles came about after a chat with old friend Ian Smart. I have known the Smart family for many years through my association with the trials world. The phone call to say that they had been awarded the Montesa dealership was most welcome, and a good excuse to have a day out in north Wales.
The majority of motorcycle shops start through someone’s passion for motorcycle sport, and Colwyn Bay Motorcycles is no different. Established in 1978 by Jeff Pritchard it was his enjoyment of riding in enduros and off-road motorcycling that made him look at the retail side of the sport. He actively competed during the seventies and eighties and initially set up a small unit selling Honda motorcycles on Abergele Road, Colwyn Bay, which was the first home of Colwyn Bay Motorcycles.
Jeff soon gained a reputation for providing good advice and service, and over the next few years the business would grow at a steady rate, with his wife Maria looking after the accounts and his son Justin joining the business when he became sixteen. As with any growing business enterprise they simply outgrew the old premises, and in 1994 he moved to the Old Laundry, which is where they are now based, in Colwyn Bay. With the expansion came a multi-franchise dealership offering Honda, KTM, Laverda, Cagiva, BMW, Moto-Guzzi, Royal Enfield, Peugeot, and MV Agusta.
Jeff ’s Daughter, Natalie, moved back to the business five years ago, and she and Justin are now managing the business day to day. The whole structure has been scaled down and the company now specialises in Honda with on-road, off-road and ATV franchises as well as KTM on- and off-road bikes. Earlier this year the dealership identified that trials riding was an area where they could see a potential growth in sales. In June 2016 they were delighted to be awarded the Montesa franchise. The company celebrated by taking their staff to Inch Perfect to hone their skills!
The Montesa brand was formed off the back of the firmly established Honda dealership and has been well received. There are many customers involved in the sport in this area, and trials riding has a decent following. Working in sales is long-time trials rider Ian Smart alongside Jeff ’s son Justin Pritchard and Steve Evans. Ian was a regular competitor throughout the nineties on the National and Centre trials scene, which is where he met his wife Rachel, nee Buckley. Rachel had grown up riding in Kickstart and School Boy events and she competed in the European Championship in 2001 and 2002. Their honeymoon was spent at the 2000 Trials Des Nations in Spain! Both Justin and Steve have also ridden trials machines regularly over the years.
A full range of Montesa trials models are in stock as are all the latest helmets, clothing, boots and accessories from Hebo. With dedicated trials staff on hand, the 37 years of motorcycling experience from the family business can be passed on.
Demonstrators are always available, and they aim to increase awareness of the brand in the local area through attendance at key events as time allows. An opportunity to come and test the latest 2017 Montesa trials range is being organised so please keep your eyes on the superb new website: www. colwynbaymontesa.com.
Colwyn Bay Motorcycles are fully aware of how important aftersales service is to the customer, and the shop offers excellent workshop facilities and a good supply of parts. With a wide variety of over 100 used motorcycles in stock why not come and visit the team in north Wales for a ‘brew’ and a chat.
