Trout Fishermann readers have their say
MY husband shoots clays and goes coarse fishing and it wears thin sometimes when he goes off. HeH feels a bit guilty when he knows I want to go out and do something too. I suppose like many wiveswive I tried to get involved and my dear husband encouraged me with kind words and incredible patience, but it was not to be. Walking the dogs one evening after work I came across a young man practising his fly casting in the fields and the dogs found it fascinating watching and chasing the line swishing back and forth. Soon I was having an impromptu lesson while the dogs found an interesting smell to investigate. I wasn’t very good but found the actual mechanics of moving the line back and sending it out again fascinating. I caught sight of my husband strolling across the fields and it wasn’t long before he too was having an impromptu lesson with me impatiently interrupting for another go. Eventually our grumbling stomachs and restless dogs dictated we go home, but not before arranging to meet with the young instructor again at the weekend. He gave us a copy of Trout Fisherman magazine. To say that first copy was read would be an understatement! We met up with Paul and he was just as generous with his time, patience and friendly advice as when I first came upon him. My husband and I have booked some lessons with him and I think my casting is smoother. The lessons will tell, but my husband and I have your magazine and the friendly and generous nature of that young trout fisherman to thank for introducing us to the peace and comradeship that trout fishing offers. My husband has promised that he will sell a gun or some coarse fishing gear to fund our own trout fishing tackle! I know the lessons will increase my passion for this sport so you have a lady of a certain age added to your ranks – and her husband when she can coax him away from his other interests. Editor’ s reply: Thanks and welcome to the peaceful art of fluff-chucking Nikki. I’ m sure both you and your husband will gain much from fishing with lighter tackle for fast trout once you’ re able to cast well enough. You’ ve done the right thing by booking an instructor and we hope you gain many useful tips from this magazine. Paul ... great job!
