Wychwood SDS Gorge waders £209.99 www.wychwoodgame.co.uk

WYCHWOOD’S new top of the range waders are the Gorge, available in M, L, XL and XXL sizes and a larger ‘king’ fitting in M, L and XL. They are made from a lightweight and durable waterproof and breathable material, with a five-layer nylon fabric used throughout the legs and seat and a softer, more flexible polyester around the chest. The material has also been given a DWR fifinish so water just beads off the outside. All seams utilise sonic welding technology, which dispenses with traditional stitching, and are backed with waterproof tape for durability. The only stitching on the waders is around the front chest pocket and the top hem. All leg seams are placed on the sides, away from high wear areas. The cut and shape of the waders is quite a tailored design with shaped and articulated legs to help with free range of movement. 1 The elasticated and adjustable webbing braces are fixed at the back but detachable at the front with male and female opposing quick-release buckles. A triangular spreader block at the back prevents the braces from twisting and crossing. Located just below the front buckles are two D-rings and two flexible rubber tool tabs and there is a single toggle lock adjuster with an elasticated cord around the top hem. 2 Two internal D-rings on the chest support an elasticated cord with four quick-release clips that can be used to attach tools or accessories. 3 The chest pocket is a good size and has a water-resistant zip. The waders also feature a flip-out zipped pocket, on the front of which is a clear roll-top waterproof pouch, perfect for a phone or valuables. This clear pouch is detachable via a Velcro strip. 4 Three welded integral belt loops support an adjustable and detachable elasticated wading belt. You can dispense with this belt, roll the waders down and secure them with the braces that double up as an additional belt. 5 The built-in gravel guards feature elasticated cuffs with wide gripper strips on the inside. A metal lace hook keeps them sealed and tightly in place. The boots are made from 4mm neoprene and designed with an ergonomic left and right foot fit. The seams are fully taped for durability.

VERDICT:

I liked the design and quality of these waders, and especially the neoprene booties that were very comfortable. The medium size was plenty big enough for me around the chest but too long in the leg (not a surprise really as I am 5ft 6in) and there’s no shorter size option to go down to. Look out for the wader/wading boots combo at around £259.99.

Tools can be attached to quick-release clips. Waterproof pouch protects valuables.
