Iain Barr fry patterns
from £1.10 www.iainbarrflyfishing.co.uk
TF contributor Iain Barr has brought out a new selection of fry patterns that are sure to get lines tightening this autumn and winter. The Real-life Minnow is the smallest of the new offerings and has a pearl tinsel tail, a tapered body (brown on the top and pearl-olive underneath) and a distinctive orange and black eye. The pattern has been covered with epoxy, giving it some weight, and it is great when cast out along the margins on a floating line, letting it drop down close the weedbeds. The size 10 Silver and Olive Popper Minkies (£1.10) are suspender patterns, incredibly effective in these smaller sizes when fish are after less of a mouthful. Tied with either Straggle silver and UV or Straggle olive and UV bodies, the two patterns also feature red and black epoxy eyes. The foam post allows them to be popped across the water to set up a chase or they can be fished on a dead drift – just watch them as you would a dry and wait for the fish to come up and hammer them. Floating Fry are very successful during the late season fry bash so be sure to give Iain’s Tube Fry patterns a go. Available in 1.5 and 2.5-inch versions at £1.30 and £1.40 each, these are made from foam and pearl Mylar tubing and are fitted with a tube extension so you can attach your choice of hook at the back end.
“The Rutland Draycote Tube has been the downfall of many a big fish.”
The Rutland Draycote Tube (£1.30) is a simple but very effective pattern and the downfall of many a big fish, especially when fished on a sinking line. The tube has a skirt of gold and silver Mylar tinsel, and again you can attach your choice of hook. Finally, there is the Tandem Humungus (£1.20), the biggest pattern on offer at just over three inches in length. Tied as a double it will prove a good mouthful for those specimen resident fish. Two hooks are connected by braid while dumb-bell eyes add the finishing touch. Its articulated construction allows for plenty of wiggle and the added movement from the marabou tail and front wing should prove irresistible!
