WHAT LINE RATED ROD SHOULD I USE?

Trout Fisherman (UK) - - Advice -

Generally speaking, hill trout are modest in size with a fish of a pound or so billed as a decent fish. Of course, the odd specimen turns up that will perhaps go 2lb, but on the whole, we can expect fish to average 10-12oz. Going at them with your standard 7wt or 8wt reservoir outfit will leave you feeling over-gunned. Far better is a 5wt, or at most 6wt rod of some 9 to 9.5 feet in length. Admittedly a 5wt doesn’t possess the same authority as a 7wt in breezy conditions, but for sheer feel and presentation, you won’t be left wanting.

Trout of a pound or so are highly prized in elevated areas.
