As touched upon pre­vi­ously, a good five me­tre (16ft 6in) leader is nec­es­sary to get the bet­ter of most fast-flow­ing sit­u­a­tions. Bunch­ing up or mend­ing a short leader is al­most im­pos­si­ble. I per­son­ally pre­fer a knot­ted leader but if you find a good ta­pered one which you can mod­ify, the re­sults are as good if not bet­ter than a knot­ted one. I use the fol­low­ing di­men­sions reg­u­larly:

There are only four knots and five lengths of monofil­a­ment. This makes the leader very sup­ple and ideal for fight­ing drag in rough wa­ters.
