As touched upon previously, a good five metre (16ft 6in) leader is necessary to get the better of most fast-flowing situations. Bunching up or mending a short leader is almost impossible. I personally prefer a knotted leader but if you find a good tapered one which you can modify, the results are as good if not better than a knotted one. I use the following dimensions regularly:
There are only four knots and five lengths of monofilament. This makes the leader very supple and ideal for fighting drag in rough waters.
