Gareth Jones highlights three Booby patterns from his early-season fly box …

GARETH Jones works for tackle giants BVG Airflo as a product developer and marketing manager. He’s also a top competition angler and Welsh international. Along with Iain Barr he’s the star of the free DVD with this issue about modern reservoir tactics. Gareth has won many match honours and is a true all-rounder at home on rivers, small waters and reservoirs. He was instrumental in negotiations to keep Llandegfedd open.

1 Olive Booby

Tied on a size 10 Kamasan B175, with olive thread, golden olive marabou tail, FNF Picric or Pellet body and 6mm yellow foam eyes. This is absolutely deadly when the fish have gone off the bright stuff and it’s one of my ‘go to’ patterns on the midland reservoirs. This fly is always on the dropper because it has enough colour without being an ‘in your face’ orange or pink.

2 Black Marabou Booby

Again, a size 10 Kamasan B175 hook, black marabou tail, body and wing, medium mirage rib and 6mm black foam eyes. A superb pattern for fishing deep, this fly has loads of movement and that makes it especially effective on the hang, with the marabou giving it loads of life as it slowly lifts up through the water column.

3 Dennis Booby

A size 10 Kamasan B175, black marabou tail, black or red Fritz body and 6mm black foam eyes. This fly has nice, subtle flash - just enough amount without being over the top, which can spook the fish. I really like the density of colour you get with this pattern and it’s a great choice if the water is a little cloudy. A top pattern for early season for me and positioned on the point of a two or three-fly leader set-up.
