North­ern Ire­land lift Com­mon­wealth ti­tle

LO­CAL knowl­edge helped North­ern Ire­land Men (pic­tured above, with a mem­ber of the NI Ladies team) lift the prov­ince’s first Com­mon­wealth Fly Fish­ing Cham­pi­onship last month. Based in and around Omagh, Co. Ty­rone, the 18th Cham­pi­onships at­tracted 16 men’s and women’s teams from around the world and the hosts tri­umphed af­ter five ses­sions, with Canada White and Scot­land Men fin­ish­ing se­cond and third re­spec­tively. Ul­ster­men took a firm grip on the in­di­vid­ual event too, with Ar­magh’s Brian Kerr see­ing off Car­rick­fer­gus an­gler and TF con­trib­u­tor Camp­bell Baird, while South Africa’s Brett Van Rens­burg fin­ished third. Top Lady An­gler was Ali­son O’Brien of South Africa. The cham­pi­onships were sup­ported by Fer­managh & Omagh Dis­trict Coun­cil; Loughs Agency, DAERA In­land Fish­eries, Fi­nore An­glers As­so­ci­a­tion, Den­nett An­glers As­so­ci­a­tion, Lough­macrory and Mur­rins Dis­trict Angling As­so­ci­a­tion, Straid Fish­ery and Wood­ford Fly Fish­ery.
