Northern Ireland lift Commonwealth title
LOCAL knowledge helped Northern Ireland Men (pictured above, with a member of the NI Ladies team) lift the province’s first Commonwealth Fly Fishing Championship last month. Based in and around Omagh, Co. Tyrone, the 18th Championships attracted 16 men’s and women’s teams from around the world and the hosts triumphed after five sessions, with Canada White and Scotland Men finishing second and third respectively. Ulstermen took a firm grip on the individual event too, with Armagh’s Brian Kerr seeing off Carrickfergus angler and TF contributor Campbell Baird, while South Africa’s Brett Van Rensburg finished third. Top Lady Angler was Alison O’Brien of South Africa. The championships were supported by Fermanagh & Omagh District Council; Loughs Agency, DAERA Inland Fisheries, Finore Anglers Association, Dennett Anglers Association, Loughmacrory and Murrins District Angling Association, Straid Fishery and Woodford Fly Fishery.
