Booby eyes bake-off

Q I’ve heard of anglers ‘baking’ booby eyes. How do you do this, and does it make any difference beyond cosmetics? Nick Lant

ROB EDMUNDS REPLIES: Baking booby eyes does make the surface of the foam slightly tougher and more resilient. It also creates a smoother and almost perfectly round eye as it slightly melts the foam. You can bake them on a low heat in the oven or use a hairdryer. Personally, I don't like this trend and think it's totally pointless. The ‘baked’ eyes aren't as buoyant and it's very easy to totally ruin a batch of eyes by over-cooking them. I also don't know of any top level competition angler that does actually bake them. If you want perfectly round eyes I suggest you use a Dremel and a concave grinding stone. It's quick and easy and the results are very good after a little practice.
