THIS dubbing marries soft, translucent synthetic SLF fibres with the spikey guard hairs of natural squirrel. It is similar to hare’s ear dubbing but slightly shorter in fibre length and the result is a lovely ‘buggy’ mix that is easy to work with. It can be dubbed directly onto the thread and ropes up with very little pressure from your fingers. If you want to rope it up nice and tight you can do, but to get the best from its spikey character I would go for a looser application. Wrap it around the hook shank to create bodies and thoraxes that can then be picked out with a dubbing needle or Velcro teaser to give an enticing leggy effect. The hair also works well in a split thread or dubbing loop but you need to pick it apart or fluff it out prior to putting it into the loop. Great for a wide range of nymph patterns, but is also suitable for emergers and dry flies as the SLF fibres will take floatant such as Gink well to keep the flies afloat. Available in an extensive colour range: black, bleached ginger, brown olive, burnt orange, dark brown, dark olive, green olive, golden olive, light olive, natural grey, olive and rusty brown. The natural grey, one of the colours I had for review, is a perfect substitute for dark hare’s ear.
