I SHOULD like to thank Jon Beer for cheering me up with his article “Chess champions” [T&S, March]. I caught my first trout in the River Chess over 50 years ago and not having even seen the river for nearly 40 years I had assumed that it had met the same fate as the other Hertfordshire/buckinghamshire chalkstreams, victims of London’s insatiable thirst. But now, thanks to Jon, I know that it’s still there and, judging by the pictures, looking as pretty as ever. Not only that, it has upwinged flies and trout and shows all the signs of a healthy stream. The story of the preservation of the Chess has made me very happy. Edwin Oxlade, Belfast
The River Chess is surviving, despite abstraction in the Chilterns.
