The first thing you notice about a Winston rod is how much thought has gone into its presentation, from the handwritten model specification on the tube cap to the quality cream rod bag. The whole production speaks of luxury like the wood-panelled dashboard on a classic sports car. The bottle-green blank is fitted with a single Nanolite stripping ring and chromed snake intermediates. The cork handle is finished with a burled box elder wooden reel seat and nickel silver butt cap. This is a premium rod that most fishers would be proud to own. It is very light in the hand, a result of a supersilica resin system, which is baked into the graphite and removes excess weight after drying. The Air is billed as a presentation rod, and it has a pleasing medium-fast action that is ideal for fishing dry-flies and lighter nymphs. It bends beautifully and has a lovely “delicate” feel. The Air works best with a “true” fly-line, one that adheres to the AFTMA rating (eg 5 or 6) rather than one of the popular lines that are a half-size heavier or more. Available in 7 ft 6 in 3 wt to 9 ft 6 wt. Contact: Glasgow Angling Centre. Tel: 0141 212 8880. Web: fishingmegastore.com

The classic Triangle Taper line is now available with a colour change, marking the join between the head (ivory) and the running line (yellow). This will help fishers to identify the maximum length of line that can be carried in the air. The Triangle Taper is a popular line among river trout anglers because the long front taper improves presentation, particularly with dry-flies fished on a more comfortable leader length of 9 ft or thereabouts. Trying to net a sea-trout in the dead of night is difficult enough without having to fumble with a net-release mechanism; even during the day it can be a nuisance. The simple flick-and-twist action of the Snowbee Folding Game Net makes life much easier. There is no catch to fumble with – simply take hold of the foam grip, swing the head of the net forwards, twist the handle with a turn of the wrist and the net is deployed. The teardrop frame is made from lightweight tubular aluminium and is fitted with rubbercoated 16 mm mesh. The whole net weights only 20.8 oz. A stainless-steel clip makes it easy to attach to a belt or D-ring. This would be a great net for sea-trout, grilse or reservoir trout. Overall length: 55 in. Folded length: 32 in. Frame: 23 by 19 in. Net depth: 20 in. Contact: Snowbee. Tel: 01752 334 933. Web: snowbee.co.uk
