THE RIVER did have water at times during May but in general it was a period of low flows. Salmon have been caught from the top of the tideway up to Armathwaite, despite the low water. Sea-trout were also seen at times. Brown trout anglers did well with nymphs and Spider patterns but it was the dry-fly exponents who did best. I heard of one angler who caught a superb brown trout estimated at 3 lb on a dry-fly from the Eamont. Despite very low water anglers fishing the Lowther caught some nice trout to 2 lb. Down at Cargo Alan Dixon caught an 8 lb salmon in a rather nasty wind in early May from the Willow pool. Fish were showing in the Willow pool and Lobbs Hole. Martin Coulthard had a 10 lb salmon from Lobbs Hole on a Flying C. On May 8 Alan Dixon had an 8 lb sealiced beauty from the Willow pool on a Red Frances. Jackie Allan caught a 10 lb hen fish in the Willow pool on a conehead Cascade and a 14-pounder on a Cascade in Lobbs Hole and followed these with fish of 10 lb and 18 lb on a Flying C and Cascade: one from Underwood’s and the other from Lobbs Hole. Fishing Underwood’s,tim Bacon had salmon of 12 lb, 10 lb and 7 lb on a Flying C on May 15 and 18. George Green had a grand day on May 17, with salmon of 8 lb, 10 lb and 12 lb from Underwood’s on a Flying C, Mick Smith had a 15 lb salmon on May 20 from Underwood’s on a Red Frances. Fish of the month, however, was a cracking 23-pounder caught on a Cascade by Martin Coulthard in the Willow pool. Between May 17 and 31 sport was good at Warwick Hall. D. Bamford had fish of 7 lb and 11 lb. Steve Sanderson caught fish of 9 lb, 10 lb and 12 lb over a couple of visits, fishing fly. Nick Marriner accounted for seven fly-caught salmon ranging 8 lb-12 lb. These came from the House pool,
Garden Wall and Rushes. Stuart Rose landed an 8 lb salmon in the Nunnery, while T. Allen had one of the same weight in the Quarry pool. S. Carlisle had an 11 lb salmon in Coops. S. Artley caught salmon of 12 lb and 13 lb in the Gravel Bed on a Flying C. D. Hodgson caught a 12 lb salmon in Coops. All these fish were very fresh, most bearing sea-lice. On the Beaumont and Grinsdale fishing, David Airey landed a 9 lb salmon in the Quarry, while Kevin Edwards had one of 12 lb. On May 12 Kevin Edwards caught a 13 lb salmon and Phil Dixon one of 9 lb. On May 17 Chris Trinick had a 14 lb salmon in the Quarry. Peter Robinson had an 11 lb salmon and Gary Macdonald a ten-pounder in the Willow Bed. On May 20 Dave Houldsworth had an 11 lb salmon on fly from the Quarry. Karl Humphries had sea-trout to 3 lb 8 oz in the Quarry on northern Spider patterns. The Lazonby Estates’ beats produced a few salmon in May, with several seen and a few lost. On May 20, Darren Bell landed a fresh 14 lb salmon on a Willie Gunn in the Meadows. The day after, David Chippendale from South Africa caught a 12 lb salmon in the Salmon pool on the Upper Lazonby beat. This fish took a Cascade-type fly. Some nice brown trout to just over 1 lb were caught during May. For bookings and fishing information contact Lazonby Estates on 01768 898 229 or e-mail mrs.linda.atkinson@ gmail.com On the Low House beat Alan Sefton caught a 17 lb salmon in the Carnook Stream on a Flying C. On May 22, John Mclay had a busy time, hooking four fish in a day but landing only one, a 14-pounder. These all came to the fly in Nichol Hole. On the same day John Hugh had a 14 lb salmon in Bransty on fly. This sport coincided with a good rise of water of over 2 ft on the gauge, which certainly woke the fish up. Geoff Stainton had a good day on May 30, with an 8 lb salmon in Bransty and a 12-pounder in Nichol Hole – both on fly. On this particular day there was a small rise of around an inch or so and this stirred up the fish. All of these fly-caught fish were landed on size 12 flies. – CUMBRIAN ROD.
