WITH LOW water at the beginning of May, baitfishing restrictions were put in place on the Bridge Flats and remained until heavy overnight on the 16th raised levels to their highest since the first day of the season. As the river rose to over 2 m on the NRW gauge it became fishable late in the day and surprisingly failed to hold its height and colour the following day. There were no reported catches. There have been only two flags to date, compared to 11 over the same period last season. Sea-trout slowly moved into the lower pools at the end of May and the first fell to Andy Renwick at just over 2 lb out of Murphy’s. Bill Pennington and Andy Nicholson have also been successful with similar-sized sea-trout. As I write (June 1) numbers of sea-trout to 6 lb have been seen, and an 11-pounder has been caught by one of the boats at Glandyfi netting station. A small spate would not go amiss. On May 26 the huge trees causing obstruction in Fir Tree pool were removed. – G. H. THOMAS.
