Trout & Salmon (UK) - - Fishing Reports -

MAY WAS a month when anglers prepared to match tactics to challenging conditions were often rewarded. River levels were low all month and it required freshets to bring the fish into the river and on the take. Activity was largely confined to the lower river. Sixteen fish were reported during May, all from around Tewkesbury and Worcester, apart from one fly-caught fish, the first to be notified this season, by Harry Dawson, fishing the noted low-water beat at Atcham. Harry took his 11-pounder on a Calvin Shrimp, which features a magenta wing, making it stand out in the coloured water from the Vyrnwy. This was on May 22 and, at the time of writing (May 31) was the last fish to be reported. May’s biggest salmon was one of 22 lb, caught by Ross Fullerton on a Flying C. Nothing was happening until May 11, when an 11 lb fish was taken at Diglis. This presaged a flurry of activity brought on by a 5 in rise, with local tributaries responsible. Fish were taken at Tewksbury (Phil Powell, 17 lb), and at Diglis (John Love, Toby Fletcher and Paul Harris). A further rise of 10 in on the 18th produced similar results, with two fish apiece to Harry Dawson and John Love and others to Mark Rushall and Chris Summerfield. Four fish in all came on the 20th at Diglis. In coloured water late on the 21st, Jason Tapp had a 7 lb fish on a fluorescent-red Salmo Seeker. Smolt migration continued for much of May, a reflection of a decent 2015 season. I understand that the EA’S provisional figures for 2016 indicate a catch of c300 salmon. This is down on the previous year (450 fish), but one hopes enough to confirm the Severn’s salmon stock status as “Probably not at Risk”. This will please Severn salmonfishers, many of whom will be aware of the NRW’S consultation on fishing methods in Wales from the 2018 season onwards.
