What to do when you hook the fish
When the trout takes your fly, tighten into the fish rather than striking vigorously. A conventional upward strike will usually result in a tangle. Strike parallel to the water surface and keep the rod low to apply side strain. Don’t be afraid to put the rod tip underwater to submerge the line and prevent it tangling with trailing branches. Know the limits of your tackle: use a strong tippet with a stout hook and put as much pressure on the fish as you can to get it out into open water.
