Trout & Salmon (UK) - - Fishing Reports - DAVID CARRICK.

THERE HAS been a severe problem with the North Side Sluice gate at the Guyzance fish pass. Northumberland Estates have been busy working on the South Sluice Gate as this was in need of repair before work could begin on the North Gate. It was hoped that this repair would only take a matters of a couple of weeks. The Environment Agency are aware of the fish deaths that have occurred which includes lampreys, eels and smaller fish including brown trout and some smolts. The Northumberland Rivers Trust has offered to help the Northumberland Estates and the new owner of the north side of the weir that recently collapsed and drained a section upstream of the weir. This south side sluice had been repaired allowing the failed north side to be repaired. The repair needs to be carried out before the main autumn runs of salmon and seatrout. This failure of the sluice means that the fish counter is currently dry. It is hoped that counts from the Environment Agency will be received for May, June and July. Anthony Shanks caught a 12lb salmon on a Mepps fishing near the Black Bridge. A few sea-trout in the 3lb class were also caught. A 5lb grilse was landed at High Park on the Felton beat of the Northumbrian Anglers Federation. A 4lb brown trout was caught on a Mepps on the lower beats of the Northumbrian Anglers Federation. Another good trout of 1lb 12oz was caught near Rothbury. Reports from the river indicate it has been the worst season in memory. October has in the past been a productive month on the Coquet with fly anglers often enjoying some fine sport with late running salmon and sea-trout. Bright patterns do well when the river is carrying some colour and the more sombre patterns do well when clear. Spinning baits should include Flying Cs and Mepps. Rapalas are also popular on the river. Fish should be well spread up into the upper reaches.. Many rods visited Northumbrian Water’s Fontburn Reservoir where sport has been good with trout chasing fry. Lures such as Cats Whisker, Humungous and Black Fritz have been effective. Some fine rainbow trout to over 5lb have been caught -
