COLOURS FOR CONDITIONS

Trout & Salmon (UK) - - Trout Surgery -

You’re probably familiar with Willie Gunns tied on tubes. Here I've tied them on copper tubes to make it easier to compare variants. The mix of yellow, orange and black hair is very attractive to salmon, but have you ever thought about the percentage mix of these colours to suit different water heights, water temperatures and visibility? For spring and colder water, I prefer to use more yellow bucktail. It shows up better in the snowmelt. If I’m fishing in peaty water, I like to use more orange, which glows in the stain (this mix looks great with a gold-tinsel body). In clearer water, or beats that see more angling pressure where fish can be easily spooked, I prefer more black.
