WALDRON LAW VICE, £1,500-PLUS

Trout & Salmon (UK) - - First Cast -

In serious fly-tying circles there are those that tie with the Law and those bereft. The most sought-after vice in fly-dressing was designed by British engineer Lawrence Waldron in the late 1980s. Minimal parts, precision engineering, supreme functionality and attractiveness: it gained a discerning following. There was and is a great pleasure in owning a vice hand-made by a craftsman you know – and Lawrence is well-known among elite fly-dressers. They were expensive new, costing a few hundred quid, but now the price is astronomical. There are rumours Lawrence still makes a few for friends, but realistically it is to the secondhand market you must turn. Yet few active tyers will part with such a prized possession. You’ll need to haunt forums and auction sites, be quick off the mark and dig deep should one become available.
