The walking dead

monday, FOX Hd, 9pm

SO, IT’S OFFICIAL. After eight seasons of playing everybody’s favourite apocalypse survivor Rick Grimes, British actor Andrew Lincoln is preparing to depart The Walking

Dead during the new series on FOX. Lincoln’s decision to leave the show was leaked to the media over Summer, and he says his only regret is that the news has ruined the surprise exit for the zombie drama’s legions of fans.

‘The Walking Dead has been so much a part of my life. I’ve breathed it for 10 years,’ he says. ‘I still regret that the story broke, because I believe the new season would have been even greater if it wasn’t spoiled to a degree.’

How and when Rick bows out from the Alexandria homestead remains to be seen (see the panel on the right for our guesses), but the 45-year-old star insists he doesn’t want the attention to overshadow the new series.

‘What we have in store this season is truly remarkable, and I’m very proud of the work that we’ve done,’ he says. ‘This has always been an ensemble, and it will continue to be an ensemble. No one is bigger than the story, and the story this year is unbelievable.’

When we last saw Rick, he had finally succeeded in capturing arch enemy

Negan (Jeffrey Dean

Morgan) after a ferocious battle between Rick’s band of survivors and Negan’s ruthless gang, the Saviors.

As we rejoin the show, two years have passed and

Rick is trying to build bridges between the rival factions while

Negan remains imprisoned.

‘It’s a different

Negan,’ explains

ANDREW LINCOLN gets set to leave The Walking

Dead – as the survivors face a new threat

Morgan. ‘He’s in a predicament and he’s having to face some stuff both internally and outside that he hasn’t had to deal with before. He’s trying not to go crazy.’

The new series also sees Rick, Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Jadis (Pollyanna Mcintosh) lead a run to a decimated Washington DC, braving even more walkers, as they continue to look for fuel and supplies.

‘We’re seeing that nature is taking over,’ reveals the show’s new showrunner Angela Kang. ‘Man-made structures are falling down and that provides challenges to the group, and we also see how intrepid they are in dealing with these new challenges. We will see some survivors trying to rebuild civilisation and grapple with what that really means.’

One of the biggest threats to the survivors’ future comes from a nomadic group, the Whisperers, who disguise themselves in zombie flesh – a tactic that allows them to move among the undead and ambush the living. British actress Samantha Morton has been cast as the vicious leader of the Whisperers, Alpha.

‘It’s a new chapter of the story,’ continues Kang. ‘And this being

The Walking Dead, there’s still danger at every turn.’
