Facing blizzards and temperatures of -60C, a colony of 11,000 emperor penguins in Antarctica’s Atka Bay attempt to rear their young. As the chicks are waiting to hatch, the females return to the sea in search of food and the males become one huge family unit to keep their chicks alive.

‘They have to survive the winter in the coldest, cruellest place on Earth,’ explains Attenborough.

‘The penguins’ bond needs to be one of the strongest in nature because every family depends upon it’.
