TEACH YOURSELF CORKONIAN

-

The Young Offenders’ guide to speaking like a true native of Cork…

‘HAUNTED’

Example: ‘We’re pure haunted by the weather.’ ‘It means that we’re very lucky,’ says Chris Walley, who plays Jock. ‘One of our directors, Jim Archer, is English, and this is one we taught him. It’s one of my favourites.’

‘FLAHED’

Example: ‘I’m absolutely flahed.’ ‘This can be used in several ways,’ explains Hilary Rose, who plays Mairéad. ‘It means you’re exhausted, but it can also mean to have sex!’

‘GOM’ Example: ‘You’re some gom, boy!’ ‘This is a good one. It means you’re an idiot, or as we say, an eejit,’ says Alex Murphy, who plays Conor. ‘I don’t know where it comes from – we have so many strange words.’

‘ME DAZZA’

Example: ‘Alex’s hair is me dazza!’ ‘This is a brilliant one. It means something is beautiful or gorgeous,’ says Rose. ‘It was a big one in the 1980s and early 1990s. There’s even a beer [Mi Daza] named after it.’
