Killer hair, physics equations and alien-splatting guns are all part of Katherine Kelly’s arsenal in new Doctor Who spin-off Class, starting online on

BBC3 this saturday.

the star of itv thriller HIM plays Miss Quill, a nightmarish science teacher at coal Hill academy, the school first mentioned in the sci-fi classic’s 1963 debut as it numbered the doctor’s granddaughter susan among its pupils.

‘Miss Quill is the most unpc teacher in existence,’ laughs Katherine, 36, when

TV Times News catches up with her. ‘she finds the physics lessons incredibly easy and the students incredibly thick – and she tells them. i couldn’t say no to playing her. she’s brilliant.’

Class centres on four students who team up to fight a deadly alien threat to earth – with some initial help from peter capaldi’s doctor, who has a cameo in the opening episode.

‘Miss Quill’s a great fighter, too, so i needed to look pretty martial-arty and not completely out of breath,’ Katherine smiles. ‘However, fly-kicking in high heels isn’t easy!’

so what’s the chance of a future cameo role in Doctor Who itself? ‘i’d be very up for it.’
