Whether you’re a monarchist or a republican, you’ll find yourself riveted by this fascinating conjecture on events behind the scenes at Buckingham Palace and Downing Street in the days after the death of Princess Diana in 1997. In a performance that rightly won her an Oscar, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA, Helen Mirren does much more than a simple impersonation of Elizabeth II, and actually loses herself entirely as the embattled monarch who is doggedly trying to uphold archaic traditions in a country that no longer understands them. Michael Sheen is equally effective as Tony Blair, whose anti-royal sentiments undergo a gradual change as he settles into his new role as Prime Minister. Dir: Stephen Frears 2006, 12, 125min
