Heroes of the Somme

documentary / 8.00pm / Yesterday

TV Times - - Thursday -

the Battle of the Somme, which raged for nearly five months from 1 July 1916, was one of the bloodiest of World War One and, indeed, in military history. More than a million soldiers died in northern France as the Allies advanced on German troops across a 15-mile frontline. This documentary tells the stories of seven heroes from the Western Front who were each awarded Britain’s highest military honour, the Victoria Cross. Family members talk about their brave relatives, while, against a backdrop of archive footage, historians explain the brutal plan of attack under Field Marshal Douglas Haig.
