Offred still isn’t pregnant, so Mrs Waterford comes up with a plan – while, unbeknown to her, Offred continues to secretly play Scrabble with her husband. Her chats with Mr Waterford make Offred recall her life with Luke ‘before’, and it’s all the more poignant to see them falling in love against the brutal context of ‘now’. She’s appalled when she finds out what happened to Ofglen – whose only crime had been to love someone else – and even more so when Mr Waterford dismisses it as an attempt to make things better. ‘Better never means better for everyone,’ he concedes. ‘It always means worse for some.’
