Storyville: Tokyo Girls
documentary / 10.00pm / BBC4
an ‘idol’ in Japan is a young girl who sings and dances and has a massive, mainly middle-aged, male following – both online and in real life. Completely obsessed by these girls, the men give up their jobs, their girlfriends and bank balances to spend time worshipping their Idol. It’s uncomfortable to watch for obvious reasons, but there’s also an innocence about it too, which makes it a confusing cultural phenomenon. Mostly it seems to be a sign of a culture in crisis, where the traditional male role is clashing so violently with modern society that this bizarre Idol culture is flourishing.
