the secret World of Posh Pets

We’re all fond of our pets – I have an adorable rabbit – but you’d be surprised how pampered some animals are. Think fur-jazzles and pawdicures. Barking!
We Brits are famous for being potty about our animals but, as ITV’S The Secret Life of Posh Pets reveals, there are some owners who push the boat out when it comes to looking after their furry friends.
Daniela Forshaw, one of the featured owners, admits that in the Essex house she shares with husband Mike and their five dogs, it’s the pampered pooches that always come first!
The 41-year-old gave up a job in banking to become a dog groomer, and lavishes beauty treatments and gifts on her pets, particularly poodles Venice and Milan.
‘Venice’s favourite is her pink toy Mini,’ says Daniela. ‘She likes to travel around in that, and she’s also got a white Bentley. There’s almost no limit to what I’ll spend on her.’
Daniela also spends hundreds of pounds glamming up her poodles to give them their look. ‘Venice is known as “pink poodle”,’ says Daniela. ‘Her signature look is pink ears, pink pom-pom feet and pink tail. And sometimes I’ll put fur-jazzles [sequins], fur extensions and glitter spray on her, and paint her nails.’
The cosseted canines enjoy eating out in restaurants, especially on holiday. ‘I’ll spend around £50 a day just on their food,’ says Daniela. ‘They like pizza, steak and ice cream. And Venice always insists on sitting at the table. It costs me more to feed them than my husband!’
At home the dogs have their own upstairs bedroom, which is kitted out with all manner of canine creature comforts.
‘It’s where they can have their own space,’ says Daniela. ‘It’s painted in pastel colours, and there are dog wardrobes with their clothes in: they’ve got designer coats, jumpers and tutus. There’s also a rack of collars and leads – for the beach, for going out to dinner and ones to match my outfits.’
Not surprisingly, the dogs’ birthdays are a big event in Daniela’s house, with lots of presents and lavish parties. ‘The dogs love opening presents, and if they see a package arriving at the house they assume it’s for them!’ she laughs.
‘Venice has had quite a few grand parties with doggie guests,’ adds Daniela. ‘A lot of money will be spent on dog canapés – smoked salmon, pâté, luxury sausages – and custom-made cakes and biscuits, and doggie cocktails. There are also luxury doggie bags for guests to take home with collars, leads, toys and bones. One time I even put in some leopard-print scented poop bags!’
The pets’ luxurious lifestyle has come at quite a cost to Daniela and Mike. ‘Since we’ve owned the dogs, we haven’t had a holiday abroad,’ she admits. ‘We used to go to places like Sri Lanka or Hawaii at least once a year, but now we spend all of our money on the dogs.’
However, for the dog-mad couple, it’s been worth it. ‘I really enjoy seeing my dogs happy,’ says Daniela. ‘People talk about their children they way I feel about my dogs. They’re not a substitute, but I think I probably love my dogs more than some people love their kids!’
It’s clear Daniela sees Venice as more human than canine. ‘She wants to act like a little girl, and I let her,’ she says. ‘Venice is a natural model – she’s been in magazines and music videos. She enjoys posing in front of the camera.’
