As the drama comes to an end, Michael faces a big de­ci­sion

drama / 9.00pm / BBC1 If Sean Bean isn’t at least nom­i­nated at next year’s BAFTAS for his per­for­mance as Fa­ther Michael Ker­ri­gan, we’ll eat our hats. The se­ries hasn’t been an easy, or, if we’re hon­est, cheer­ful watch most of the time, but it’s been ut­terly com­pelling. As it draws to a close, all of Michael’s demons seem to be gath­er­ing. As his mother’s health wors­ens, he helps Roz’s daugh­ter Chloe as she tar­gets bet­ting shops she feels con­trib­uted to her mum’s sui­cide. Mean­while, Michael is tor­mented about whether to con­fess to ig­nor­ing He­len’s call for help. All of which leads him to con­tem­plate his fu­ture… We prom­ise there won’t be a dry eye in the house in the fi­nal scenes.
