First Night of the Proms
Two months of musical bliss on TV and radio starts here
music / from 8.00pm / BBC4 & BBC2 Continuing to broaden its appeal, the 123rd BBC Proms season includes nods to pop (an evening of Scott Walker songs), jazz (celebrations of Dizzy Gillespie, Charles Mingus and Ella Fitzgerald), musicals (a performance of
Oklahoma!) and cinema (a John Williams night). But classical music is still its bread and butter. This first night features a performance of
John Adams’s Harmonium,
Beethoven’s Third piano
concerto and the world premiere of St John’s Dance by up-and-coming British composer Tom Coult. Many big-ticket events such as tonight are already sold out – the ‘world’s largest classical music festival’ isn’t short of fans.
