The pro­gramme shows how some in­sects pro­duce a form of an­tifreeze to help them sur­vive win­ter, but we also see how birds rely on hu­man sup­port.

‘As a na­tion we spend over £200mil­lion on bird food a year and for birds such as tits and goldfinches, that im­proves their win­ter sur­vival. Their pop­u­la­tions are sta­bil­is­ing and in­creas­ing due to this proac­tive con­ser­va­tion in our gar­dens,’ says Chris. ‘We also look at how robins are fe­ro­ciously ter­ri­to­rial and ag­gres­sive, and their red breasts are their war paint to help them keep their ex­clu­sive ter­ri­tory.’
