Jane Tennison

Prime Suspect (ITV series) 1991-2006

TV Times - - Interview - (Dame helen mirren)

When Helen Mirren created the iconic lead role of DCI Jane Tennison, she paved the way for many inspiring TV women to come…

‘It’s not a case of taking what Helen did and copying it, but you have to acknowledge those who have gone before you,’ says Amanda. ‘As far as British TV is concerned that role was pivotal in changing people’s attitudes about a woman being able to carry a male-dominated world.’

‘She didn’t have “women’s issues”. you could swap her problems with a male character and nothing would change, which is a sign of great writing.’

Despite the strides made by the popular series, Amanda still feels there’s a long way to go. ‘There are so few dramas like

Prime Suspect, that’s the trouble,’ she says. ‘Most still have a male protagonist and the story centres around him, so usually the woman is the wife, girlfriend or mistress. There are still very few strong women like Jane

Tennison.

I really want to catch up with Happy Valley over the summer because Sarah Lancashire looks brilliant in the clips I have seen.’
