Marvel’s Cinematic Universe gets mystical with its latest superhero, as Benedict Cumberbatch’s Dr Stephen Strange enters the fray. He’s a conceited, incredibly smart surgeon who, after an accident, loses the ability to perform complex tasks, drawing him to a more paranormal cure. With the aid of Tilda Swinton’s Ancient One, he learns the art of sorcery, eventually coming up against arch villain Mads Mikkelsen and all manner of fantastical apparatus. This origin story may be standard for superhero movies, but the script is pin-sharp and the visuals spectacular, while Cumberbatch is quite the master of the withering one-liner, as well as a terrific action hero. It’s a wild, vibrantly lit ride.
