Steve stuns Leanne by suggesting they walk up the aisle together
Mon, WED, FRI / ITV
Leanne could be Steve Mcdonald’s bride number seven if she agrees to play happy families with the father of her child. I wonder if anyone has suggested the producers make a musical mash-up for the wedding? I can see it now, Steve slapping his thigh singing,
Oh, Lordy. Just when you thought Steve’s love life couldn’t get any more disastrous, he goes and proposes to Leanne. So that’ll be his seventh wedding - if she’s daft enough to say yes - followed inevitably by his seventh divorce.
Steve comes up with the not-sobright idea after Leanne and baby Oliver move into his flat. She’s finding it a bit ‘awks’ at the Rovers with Peter and Toyah, and when Eva insists she move in with her and Aidan, Steve suggests that living with him would be a much better option, as they could then share parenting duties.
Leanne agrees, and the pair prove to be quite a team as they try to get their grizzling son to sleep through the night using the controlled crying technique. Despite being sleep-deprived, they continue to get on so well that Liz wonders if they could have a future together.
Steve’s thinking the same thing when Leanne later returns home early from a night out with Eva and Toyah, saying she’d rather stay in with him and watch a DVD. When she then presents him with father and son Weatherfield County FC shirts, he’s so overwhelmed that he asks her to marry him.
‘Steve has always tried to do the right thing by his children,’ says Simon Gregson, who plays the Streetcars owner, ‘which is why he asked Tracy Barlow to marry him, even though he wasn’t interested in her in the least. He did it for his daughter, Amy. He’s now thinking the same thing with Leanne, although she is a million miles away from Tracy. They have known each other since they were young and they have a laugh together, and he thinks “Maybe, this time, it could work”.’
Leanne’s gobsmacked and, after listing all the numerous reasons why marriage would be a complete and utter disaster, she heads to the Rovers. Knocking back vodka, she tells Toyah and Eva about Steve’s proposal. But as her sisters crack jokes about him, Leanne finds herself leaping to his defence. Will she surprise them – and herself – by becoming the next Mrs Mcdonald?
Steve thinks: ‘Maybe this time, it could work…’
On a whim: Will it be a seventh wedding for Steve?
Cheers: Vodka helps Leanne come clean to her sisters
