Who Do You Think You Are?
TV presenter Emma Willis uncovers an unpleasant surprise in her family history
genealogy / 9.00pm / BBC1
Big Brother host Emma is hoping her working-class roots will run deep in Birmingham, where she grew up. But she finds herself in Dublin reading about her five-times great grandfather, Richard Fowler, who was a violent Protestant landowner. It’s a shock for Emma, who was hoping to find ‘good men’ who worked hard and looked after their families – values she holds dear in her own life. But all is not lost. Just two generations after Richard was stabbing Catholic rebels, Harriet Fowler married a Catholic who became lauded not only for his fine work as a marble craftsman but also as a campaigner for workers’ rights. The Brummiegirl-done-good breathes a huge sigh of relief.
