Still one of the greatest movies about movies, especially the transition from silent cinema to the talkies, this 1952 musical holds up remarkably well, thanks to cracking tunes and boisterous performances. As co-director, star Gene Kelly was hard on the cast, with Debbie Reynolds, just
19 at the time, suffering bloody feet as a result of Kelly’s perfectionism when it came to the dance numbers. That eye for detail paid off, though, as this box-office smash was an instant classic and has remained so ever since.
