Viva Las Vegas
film / 2.55pm / BBC2
regarded as elvis Presley’s best movie of the 1960s, this frothy mix of sunshine, Ann-margret, fast cars and, of course, cracking tunes proved a massive hit in its day. The story, what little there is of it, sees Presley play Lucky Jackson, a racing driver from the wrong side of the tracks who’s determined to win the Las Vegas Grand Prix, but forced into becoming a waiter to pay for his car’s blown engine. There he meets swimming instructor Ann-margret and off they pop for some fun, exuberant dance routines. With songs like the title number, Come On, Everybody and The Yellow Rose of Texas, it’s hard not to get caught up in the frivolity, too.
