English yew clip­pings are now at the front­line of the bat­tle against can­cer. they can be used to pro­duce taxol, a drug used in the treat­ment of ovar­ian can­cer and cer­tain tu­mours. ‘Gar­den­ers all over the uk collect yew fo­liage and send it to France to be dis­tilled,’ says ni­cholas Wray of the Western Medicine Gar­den in Bris­tol, which fea­tures in this week’s episode. ‘It takes huge amounts to get a few millil­itres of this pow­er­ful drug.’
