My Family, Partition and Me

A season of films on Partition begins with Anita Rani’s story

TV Times - - Wednesday -

documentary / 9.00pm / BBC1 It’s 70 years this month since India won its independence and since the state was split in two, which led to decades of conflict. Anita Rani takes a deeply personal look at Partition in this poignant two-parter, travelling with her mum to Pakistan to investigate how some of their Sikh relatives were killed in the ensuing violence. Equally emotional are the journeys of three members of the public with links to India and Pakistan, who revisit their own and their relatives’ pasts. Most heartbreaking of all is the story of 78-year-old cancer sufferer Asad Ali Syed, who is visibly distraught as he returns to the Indian birthplace that he fled as a small child.
