Plants are one of our most vital sources of medicine, and this Sunday’s Countryfile special sees presenter Ellie Harrison look at the healing benefits of flowers and herbs.
‘Plants are a valuable resource, with health-giving properties that improve our body and even our soul. A lot of our common drugs hail from the natural world, so you can get aspirin from willow, morphine is derived from opium poppies and aloe is used to treat sunburn,’ says Ellie, 39. ‘Nature was the original medicine cabinet and it has been harnessed for centuries to aid serious medical conditions, including some of our most lifethreatening illnesses. Natural remedies are a lucrative industry.’
