Plants are one of our most vi­tal sources of medicine, and this Sun­day’s Coun­try­file spe­cial sees pre­sen­ter El­lie Har­ri­son look at the heal­ing ben­e­fits of flow­ers and herbs.

‘Plants are a valu­able re­source, with health-giv­ing prop­er­ties that im­prove our body and even our soul. A lot of our com­mon drugs hail from the nat­u­ral world, so you can get as­pirin from wil­low, morphine is de­rived from opium pop­pies and aloe is used to treat sun­burn,’ says El­lie, 39. ‘Na­ture was the orig­i­nal medicine cab­i­net and it has been har­nessed for cen­turies to aid se­ri­ous med­i­cal con­di­tions, in­clud­ing some of our most lifethreat­en­ing ill­nesses. Nat­u­ral reme­dies are a lu­cra­tive in­dus­try.’
