Scorsese’s 1991 remake got a mixed reception but this 1962 original positively bombed. Perhaps its story of a lawyer (Gregory Peck) and his family being stalked by the psychopath (Robert Mitchum) he helped put in jail was just too dark, too ahead of its time. Peck, Mitchum and support player Martin Balsam all resurfaced in Scorsese’s remake, as did Bernard Herrmann’s jangly score. When you've got a good thing, why mess with it?
