the Welsh GUARDS
corporal Philip Bartlett, 24, was one of eight Welsh Guards chosen to carry Diana’s coffin at the special request of the Prince of Wales.
‘I was trying to keep my mind off the
pain,’ says Philip, recalling the sheer exertion of helping to support the lead-lined casket that weighed one quarter of a tonne. ‘One of the men slipped, but I don’t think we would have ever dropped it. You always had in the back of your mind who you were doing this for – you were doing it for the public and for the boys. ’
