The former squaddie returns with more than a bruised ego
Gary arrives back from Ukraine this week, but his bulging wallet isn’t the only thing he has to show for his security work.
Unbeknown to Sarah, his back and ribs are covered in bruises. What exactly has happened to him while he was in the war-torn country?
The former soldier turns up without warning at Sarah’s parent support group. She’s gone to the meeting hoping it will help her cope with daughter Bethany’s grooming ordeal. Initially, she gives Gary the cold shoulder as she told him they were finished when he chose the contract over her. But he soon wins her over.
‘Sarah’s quite frosty with him, but as she opens up about what happened to Bethany, she allows him to comfort her,’ says Tina O Brien, who plays her. ‘As he talks about his feelings for her, she realises she doesn’t want to be without him.’
But, no sooner has Sarah got used to Gary being home, he reveals that he’s flying back to Ukraine for a new job. ‘Sarah’s gobsmacked’, adds Tina. ‘She can’t accept his news, and it puts a real strain on their relationship.’
Failing to change Gary’s mind, Sarah decides to make the most of the time they have left together and suggests an afternoon ‘lie down.’ She’s hurt when he pulls away from her, but understands when he says it’s because he needs to see his son, Jake. Sarah has no idea Gary is lying to her. As he pulls off his shirt while alone, it’s clear he’s avoiding getting intimate because he doesn’t want her to see his injuries.
As Gary prepares to jet back to the danger zone, will Sarah discover his painful secret?
