Mountain: Life At The Extreme WEDNESDAY / bbc2 / 9.00Pm

Mountains are among the most beautiful habitats on Earth, but they can also be unforgiving terrains. In a stunning new series starting this week, we meet some astonishing animals and extraordinary people, who, against the odds, make their homes in these rugged habitats.

‘Mountains are hypnotic, romantic places, where you can put your daily cares aside and get a new perspective,’ says Steve Greenwood, series producer of Mountain:

Life At The Extreme.

‘But they’re tough places to live, because they’re unpredictable and have incredible extremes, from temperature to lack of oxygen and the short growing season.’

The three-part series will examine life in the Rockies in

North America, the Himalayas in Asia and the Andes in South America, and reveal how different species have found ways to survive in such challenging environments.

‘We cover well-known creatures,’ says Steve, whose team used drones to capture much of the glorious footage, ‘but there are some surprises, too, in the incredible way that some lesser-known animals adapt to mountain life.’

Here, Steve talks us through the highlights from each episode…

Stretching 3,000 miles along the spine of canada and the usa, the Rockies are among the natural wonders of the world. They take a starring role in the opener of this magnificent three-parter, which explores life in tough mountainous areas. Highlights include a mountain lion with a secret food stash, the elusive wolverine and a brave elk calf ’s bid to elude predators. We also meet inspiring people who make the Rockies their home, including Native American families and their frenzied Indian Relay bareback horse races. With gorgeous scenery and unusual sights, it’s a stunning watch.
