From dame To duchess

Legendary actress dame diana Rigg joins the regular cast as the outspoken duchess of Buccleuch. She tells TV Times more…

your character sounds great!

She is fun and lovely to play. She has no long speeches, just punchy lines. Creator daisy Goodwin has given the duchess of Buccleuch every prejudice a grand Victorian dame would have. What do you love most about your character?

Her candour, the fact she is straightforward. She is a very efficient sort of woman, but so am I, so we have that in common. you recently played a similarly outspoken role in Game of thrones… Olenna Tyrell didn’t behave in an acceptable fashion just to be accepted, she went her own way, and I hope she encouraged young women to be the same. The duchess also does her own thing, until Victoria tries to put her in her place – but I think it bounces off her! How did you find the period costumes? I’m beyond a corset, so I don’t have to suffer that. I’m not interested in having a waist. I only take half-an-hour in wardrobe and make-up because I’m long past improving my appearance, so I try to get it done as quickly as possible.
