War one. In the au­tumn of 1916 Al­lied losses were so great, Churchill was fear­ful Bri­tain was about to lose the war. A se­cret deal was drawn up with China to send over masses of man­ual labour­ers to help with the war ef­fort. They worked 10-hour days, seven days a week and were cru­cial in en­abling Al­lied forces to keep fight­ing. But prej­u­dice and racism has meant they have been erased from his­tory. Now a cam­paign, helped by Joanna Lum­ley, is hop­ing to erect a me­mo­rial to mark these men’s in­valu­able con­tri­bu­tion.
