ANDROMEDA MEGA EXPRESS ORCHESTRA

UNCUT - - New Albums - SAM RICHARDS

Vula ALIEN TRANSISTOR 7/10 Notwist-affiliated free jazz/ neo-classical ensemble Based in Berlin, the 18-piece, multinational Andromeda Mega express Orchestra are europe’s answer to the Sun Ra Arkestra, without the robes. For a large ensemble they are mind-bogglingly tight, although the music of their fourth album – inspired by Malawian thunderstorms – doesn’t swing quite as much as you’d hope, veering more towards the lush neoclassical moves of Penguin Café or Piero Umiliani’s spry exotica than the cosmic supplications of Sun Ra. But there’s still plenty of fun to be had, especially when “In Light Of Turmoil” keeps threatening to break into the Sportsnight theme before eventually landing somewhere just north of Debussy.
