NICOLE ATKINS

UNCUT - - New Albums - RoB HugHeS

Goodnight Rhonda Lee SINGLE LOCK 7/10 Rousing R&B from recent Nashville transplant Producers Niles City Sound, featuring ex-white Denim men Josh Block and Austin Jenkins, are now doing for Nicole Atkins what they did for Leon Bridges a couple of years back – teasing out aching popsoul bathed in the nostalgic warmth of another era. There’s something of “Unchained Melody” to the very fine “A Little Crazy”, co-written with Chris Isaak, plus imprints of Dusty Springfield or Carole King in “A Night Of Serious Drinking” and the brassy, string-softened “Darkness Falls So Quiet”. Yet Atkins is also possessed of a singular, torchy voice that floods these songs with genuine fervour.
