UNCUT - - New Albums - NIGeL WILLIaMsON

Kin Sonic GLITTERBEAT 8/10 expansive second album from streetwise Congolese rockers Jean-Pierre Bokondji – aka Jupiter – was approaching 50 when he released his spectacular debut HÔtel Univers in 2013. Rave reviews afforded the self-styled ‘rebel general’ of Congolese music the opportunity to tour the world, with the result that Kin Sonic is a far more expansively international affair. The tough-edged, urban beats of Kinshasa still drive songs such as “Benanga” and “Ofakombolo”, but Damon Albarn contributes deranged keyboards, Bad Seed Warren Ellis’ violin swoops and soars dramatically on “Pondjo Pondjo”, and the production by MarcAntoine Moreau (Amadou & Mariam/ Songhoy Blues) adds a high-octane sheen with an appeal far beyond the world music stockade.
